Mesa Verde runs off of our labor. We are the ones who prepare and serve the food, who clean the bathrooms and the dorms. We are paid $5 per week for our official jobs, and the rest we do for free. We are tired of working for a facility that does nothing for us. We will not work and we will not collaborate with GEO. We refuse to make it easier for you to continue unnecessarily caging and murdering us.
We demand our freedom, and in the meantime, we demand that ICE and GEO immediately:
1) Stop transferring people from criminal custody into ICE detention and putting our lives at risk (we also call on Governor Newsom to end this now);
2) Serve us fresh, nutritious food--including fruit, real meat, and larger portions;
3) Repair our bathrooms, and clean and sanitize our dorms regularly;
4) Require all staff to wear masks and gloves at all times;
5) Give us adequate medical care, not just ibuprofen;
6) Provide free, high-quality hygiene supplies and reduce commissary prices so that we can buy the things we need to take care of ourselves;
7) Give us consistent, affordable access to tablets so that we can communicate with our families and the outside world;
8) Provide us better quality shoes, clothing, and bedding;
9) Provide us productive stress outlets (like punching bags in the rec yard, art classes, and regular religious services) and self-help programs (like AA, NA, ESL, vocational training, GED) for our mental health;
10) Pay us fair wages for our work.
We will not be divided, and we will not negotiate with you separately. We want you to recognize our humanity, and stop putting our lives at risk.
